Yasiin Bey, the artist formally known as Mos Def, is a top 10 pick when you’re talking about the best hip hop acts of all time. The prolific and often controversial New York MC is known for his incredibly smooth cadence and lyricism, something that has made him one of the most influential 90s figures in hip hop.
Lately he’s been quiet candid about stepping away from the mic announcing a final pair of shows in New York and Washington, D.C. His last studio release was created alongside newcomer producer Ferrari Sheppard and they are now collectively known as December 99th.
Their self titled project will be available exclusively through TIDAL on December 9. While it is exclusive to TIDAL, non-members are able to sign up for a trial subscription.
December 99 has released three singles so far from the album that are called “Local Time”, “Seaside Panic Room” and “N.A.W.”. The project boasts 9 tracks that are all in the realm of 99 beats per minute which relates to their namesake.
The album was recorded while Bey was in South Africa awaiting news about his immigration woes. For those who don’t know he was caught trying to leave SA with a World Passport, a document that is not recognised by many countries in the world.
After some turmoil he was asked to leave the country and placed on their “undesirable persons” list which means he is unable to enter again.
